There have been many rumor mills turning ever since the GHOSTBUSTERS franchise was greenlit. One of the bigger ones was how Marvel’s film architects, Joe and Anthony Russo, were next in line to produce/direct an all-male version of GHOSTBUSTERS. While this wasn’t entirely untrue, what little part they did have has been thrown to wayside. Here’s what Joe Russo had to say:
"There is no status with that [GHOSTBUSTERS film] for us. There was a period there when Paul Feig was engaging Sony in talks about GHOSTBUSTERS and we were also engaging them. He was further along with his process than we were and he closed his deal so that’s the only GHOSTBUSTERS world that’s being explored right now over at Sony. Once we took AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR it took us off the table for any kind of any potential work on a GHOSTBUSTERS project."
Does that mean that an all-male GHOSTBUSTERS film is completely off the table for other directors? Probably not. So long as there is a dime to be squeezed out of a project, there will always be someone in Hollywood crazy enough to do the squeezing. I imagine the fate of another GHOSTBUSTERS film is now upon Paul Feig’s production’s shoulders.
Do people want more GHOSTBUSTERS? Does having an all-female cast make a film sexist in its own way? Or, is it more deplorable that we are even focusing on the sex of the cast members at all? A can of worms has been opened up and there is no way to shut it now. Let us know what you think!
