Welcome to ISSUE 51 of THE MARVELOUS DA7E!
What Is This? If this is your first time, know that Da7e is a crazy fan of comic book movie franchises. He's less a fan of coherent sentences. He thinks being a fan of something is the greatest way of loving it.
This week: So much happened, let's speculate about our main 3 universes (sorry Fox, try harder)
Oh man, it feels like it’s been a long time since we’ve talked some superhero movie news and rumors. And there’s all this Star Wars stuff happening. While I often feel Bad Robot is laughing at me, I don't always feel that way about my Marvelous Speculations. I get my fandoms a little mixed up like a sweet-sweet cocktail. Other times I wonder if Disney is just my emotional counterpoint, gripping all the franchises I love in their Mickey Mouse gloves without really caring.
But, as always, I’ve digressed from the point of the column way too early. I’m going to have to stay on track somehow, so I guess we can use schedule. Here’s a list of the upcoming superhero movie franchise properties of note:
August 2014 - Guardians of the Galaxy
May 2015 - Avengers: Age of Ultron
July 2015 - Ant-Man
May 2016 - Captain America 3
May 2016 – Batman v Superman
June 2016 - Spider-Man?
July 2016 – Shazam
Late 2016 - Dr. Strange
Xmas 2016 – Sandman
May 2017 - Spider-Man?
May 2017 – Justice League
July 2017 – Wonder Woman
Xmas 2017 – Flash and Green Lantern team-up
May 2018 - Spider-Man Spin-off
May 2018 – Man Of Steel 2
2019 - The Batman
Good LORD. I also left some rumored stuff out, and all the Fox properties because they’re not overlapping into a single movie universe anymore. But, already that’s a lot.
I’m going to be doing this forever aren’t I? Sigh. Ok. Dig in.
Let’s start at the bottom and work our way back FROM the Future.
El Mayimbe’s “hot rumor” about The Batman makes production sense. Tons of production sense, especially for Ben Affleck. Batfleck is what’s going to pay for all his kids to go to college and he’ll still have time to make his arty non-Bat movies inbetween installments of growling “Clark!”
Plus, this is a safe place to deposit the safe movie - Batman’s still a solid film property in the Nolan and Burton oeuvres, so it would make sense for Affleck to take a Batman direction from Snyder and really make it his own. Let’s just hope it has nothing to do with Batman’s origin, because: SNORE! Certainly by 2019, we’ll all be really familiar with how Batman started.
MAN OF STEEL 2
I hope they’re not holding off Brainiac until here, but - then again - that would involve Kandor, maybe and the opportunity for more crazy space travel. If Man of Steel 2 is more a continuation of Superman’s post-versus story, then they might as well really dig into what it means to be Superman, and not in a Superman III kind of way. I’m talking about crazy cosmic things. Which will have a lot more storyworld backing coming out of the Flash/Green Lantern Team Up movie. This should NOT be a Doomsday kills Superman movie. I know it’s tempting but...what happened to that other open pod from Man of Steel? Supergirl?
Can I take a moment to yell at people? I’m not yelling at you, I’m yelling at other people. You can yell at other people too, just say something like this: NO ONE EVER SAID THERE WAS GOING TO BE AN AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 4. There. I don’t know how “ASM 4” continued to be a thing we cited after it was revealed that The Sinister Six and Venom were going to be made into spin-offs. Obviously, when Sony parked on a May 2018 release date they knew, it’d probably be the first post-Garfield movie.
I think this SHOULD be a Sinister Six movie because then you have many years to establish real characters as villains, but I think it’s probably more likely to be a Venom movie because I think Alex Kurtzman (Venom director) and Drew Goddard (Sinister Six director) might not include each other’s characters as much as we’d think. That’s me guessing.
FLASH/GREEN LANTERN TEAM UP
All I could picture when heard about this movie and this release date is they’re going to go super Christmas colors with the advertising. Red-based Flash, Green-based Green Lantern? I mean, the fact that Professor Zoom, Flash’s villain and Sinestro, Green Lantern’s villain are yellow villains also means the entire teaser ad campaign for this movie could be a photo of a stoplight in a snowy intersection. I’m very interested to see if this is a different flash from the TV series or if this Barry Allen meets a Jon Stewart Lantern who can eventually do deep social commentary with Arrow’s Oliver Queen on TV or in their own little movie sometime in the 2020s.
First off, Gal Godot, you go girl.
Barring Zack Snyder being a complete dick and sidelining the Wonder Woman character in her introductions, Gal Godot is going to be the Wonder Woman we’re talking about for decades (so close but so farm Adrianne Palicki).
I really hope that the DC Universe has enough success with Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League to not completely ruin the idea of a Wonder Woman movie.
Actually, that’s probably my biggest reason for hoping Dawn of Justice is good. I’m going to see and enjoy Superman and Batman fighting regardless, the real question as a comics fan is if it’s worth holding Wonder Woman off so late without abusing her character as a bit player in her earlier appearances ( also after weaker fandoms for Shazam and people that actually think Sandman is adaptable).
Martian Manhunter is totally in this movie. So is Darkseid and Aquaman. Which means we already have too many team members.
But Batman and Superman, we’ve seen a lot of them. And Flash? He has a TV series. And Wonder Woman? She can be “Black-Widowed” just fine. Cyborg feels weird here, but who am I to doubt Zack Snyder?
I’m really looking forward to this movie because otherwise I’d be dreading the inevitable for years and that kind of stress takes time off my life. But, where as a superhero team-up movie is kind of perfect for a writer/director like Joss Whedon: writer of the best parts of things like Speed and Toy Story, creator of Buffy (a team show with a strong female lead), it's different on this movie. Zack Snyder using this many characters makes me nervous. It’s basically the same thing that makes me nervous about Dawn of Justice and sadly, the thing I was correct about with X-Men: Days of Future Past. If the characters don’t have compelling arcs, I’d rather they not be there. Hawkeye just BARELY justifies existing in The Avengers, anything below that is a waste of something great.
Amazing Spider-Man 2 is just barely gonna crack even, budgetary wise, which is not something Sony wanted from it’s potential billion dollar franchise installment. Jeremy over at Ain’t It Cool News wrote “ but I have been told that THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 3 has been moved to an undetermined date in 2017. ”
Let’s assume that happened, this spot in the schedule would be Amazing Spider-Man 3. They could have pushed ASM3 back here because they want more time with the brain trust to write it. They could have pushed ASM3 back here to make room for a Sinister Six movie in 2016. They could have pushed Amazing Spider-Man 3 back here to get Shailine Woodley clear of the Divergent series so they could bring her back as Mary Jane. Or this could be a discussion/rumor/wholly separate Spider-film. I’m not sure what the consequences are, ultimately, until we hear official word on what’s parking itself on Sony’s previous ASM3 2016 date.
I like Neil Gaimen, I like a lot of Joseph Gordon Levitt movies, but I don’t think I’d trust a Sandman movie to a major studio ever, ever, ever. The entire Sandman epic by Gaimen is written specifically like a fantasy comic and even if Seth Rogen is gonna try to bring a comic like Preacher to TV, that still sounds much more possibly than getting what’s special about Neil Gaimen’s Sandman into a single movie. This is going to be a disaster.
Jon Spaihts writing? I liked his Prometheus script, so I like the idea of that. Scott Derrickson directing is a solid decision. I don’t like Jared Leto, but that shouldn’t really matter if he’s forced to be a Team Marvel player. Marvel isn’t going to let anything like the negotiating power of Robert Downey Jr ever happen again, so I think they could control a Leto or a Depp or any of the countless names that have been rumored. But I’m guessing we’ll get a face to put to this movie real soon. Pre-Comic Con if they can.
This is an honest to God mystery to me. I
s he going to be part of the Justice League Universe? The Sandman movie can take place in the same world as the Justice League but deal with Dream and his family, Shazam kind of covers a lot of the same territory. Is this a kid’s movie? Some sort of mix between Superman: The Movie and Big? My initial reaction when I saw this news is that DC and Warner Bros knows Marvel’s going to get to Captain Marvel (Ms. Marvel, same thing) sooner rather than later.
Since Shazam is actually Captain Marvel in his comics origin and we only have vague ideas of what MCU’s Phase 3 is gonna be, this might be planting a flag and trying to face off with the Disney/Marvel juggernaut a-la Quicksilver in Days of Future Past.
This is where Amazing Spider-Man 3 went. Now it’s either going to be Amazing Spider-Man 3 or Sinister Six (Drew Goddard getting pulled of Netflix’s Daredevil signals that they need him on Spider-Man now for some reason or another). OR...they could abandon this date. But doesn’t that look like defeat? Sony’s not big on looking defeated.
BATMAN V. SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE
What’s there to say that hasn’t been said about this movie that is still shooting LexCorp scenes? There’s that giant statue of Superman and - HEY! - Aquaman’s going to be in it (as a Game of Thrones fan, I endorse #AquaDrogo as my tag).
Remember that rumor that Aquaman would show up pissed off because the World Engine killed of sea-life? Then that giant statue of Superman is going to be unveiled to a bunch of kids wearing “Superman Survivor” t-shirts?
If the goal of Zack Snyder is to make me want to see Batman punch EVERYONE IN THE FACE for being stupid, it sounds like he’s succeeding. This movie should be BATMAN V. EVERYONE, then at least “Dawn of Justice” would make sense: Batman’s not taking this sh*t anymore.
Hey, here are some set photos of a Lexcorp helicopter and that statue I mentioned:
CAPTAIN AMERICA 3
Mike Ryan over at Screencrush talked to Frank Grillo about The Purge: Anarchy and basically got him to confirm, post-Winter Soldier, that he’s back for Captain America 3. That whole hinting at the Crossbones costume was not a fluke.
Mike Ryan: When you signed on for ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier,’ did you sign a multi-film contract?
Frank Grillo: I did.
I know a character is important when after a lot of chaos, we see a close-up of that character to prove he’s still alive. They did that with your Brock Rumlow aka Crossbones character.
Yeah, it’s good, you know … I don’t have any baggage. How many guys at my age don’t have any baggage?
You can define yourself any way you want.
I can be anyone I want.
In 2008, we hear Robert Downey Jr. is Iron Man and we have a good sense of what that may be like. With you and Crossbones, it really could be anything.
I’m going to tell you something that is great about the fanboys. Once you get on their radar and they respect what you’re doing — you’re kind of living up to what they expect from you — it changes your life.
Because the studios and the powers that be that create these movies, they listen to the fanboys. Kevin Feige is one of the biggest fanboys of all. He knows his shit. So, now I kind of have this little fanboy following that is getting bigger and bigger because I’m not doing anything stupid to disrespect the character.
I like that fanboy comment because what Crossbones is most recently remembered for is killing Steve Rogers and making Bucky take over as Captain America. Look, I don’t know who is behind the red, white and blue shield for Avengers 3 anymore.
This sounds correct. I doubt Crossfire’s stupid, stupid costume shows up looking anything like it. I like the idea that based on recent rumors, Cross’ suit is going to vaguely riff on Yellow Jacket. I hope I’m not too far off. If they’re going to focus on the Ant part of Ant-Man because it’s Scott Lang, I will take as many Easter Eggs about Pym Particles as Adam McKay thinks he can write in to Edgar Wright’s old script.
AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON
Not a lot to say about this movie that won't leak out between now and it's release, but I did want to stop by and say: “Mark Ruffalo only misspoke when he said Marvel was just starting to think about a solo Hulk movie.”
Remember how big the Hulk played in The Avengers? Remember “puny god?” It’s sweet of you, Mark Ruffalo to toe the company line, but Disney/Marvel has always had a place to put the Hulk in mind.
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY
And, rounding out this checkup on the three major unified franchises, Guardians of the Galaxy. We’re gonna see some Thanos and we’re going to see a post credits scene that has ___________________________ in it and…
...We’re gonna see Nova.
Here’s the part I can’t get confirmed, but knowing the internet and superhero fandom’s history with this guy, I figure I’d just pass this on and hope it’s right because it’ll illicit a small cheer from Firefly and Castle fans.
I think Nathan Fillion cameos as Nova.
I expect this to be ignored or denied and, personally, I don’t want to know anymore. I just want to know to have my eyes peeled.
