The short list for the He-Man movie Masters of the Universe has been revealed and it includes the likes of Harald Zwart, Chris McKay and Mike Cahill. Word is that there are other directors in the mix, but TheWrap only mentions the said three.
Jon M. Chu was previously attached to direct the film. He signed on to the project last summer and brought in Alex Wenk (Predators) to pen the script. The film is based on the classic 1980s animated TV series. He-Man is based in Eternia, and follows a blond warrior named Prince Adam who turns into the heroic He-Man and battles a villain named Skeletor out to conquer Castle Grayskull.
Zwart seems like the best man for the job. He directed Sony's reboot of The Karate Kid, which made a ton of money. He was also at the helm of Pink Panther 2 and Mortal Instruments: City of Bones.
Cahill has also dabbled in sci-fi themed films, including Another Earth and I Origins.
Lastly we have McKay who has yet to direct a narrative film. However, he does have something going for him that the other two don't. He was the editor of this year's The Lego Movie, which is being hailed as a great movie for kids and adults. He's also one of the key creative forces behinds the series Robot Chicken.
Terry Rossio (The Lone Ranger) wrote the most recent draft of Masters of the Universe.
