We've just received our first look at Daniel Radcliffe (The Harry Potter Series) as Igor from an upcoming Frankenstein adaptation, directed by Paul McCuigan (Lucky Number Slevin). Igor is the lab assistant of Dr. Victor von Frankenstein, who creates a monster using the reanimated body parts of several dead men. The doctor will be played by James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class).
Here's our glimpse of Radcliffe in character.
Notable here is that they're not going for the hobbled-over hunchback of previous incarnations. The character of Dr. Frankenstein's assistant has taken several forms in the cinematic adaptations of Mary Shelley's novel. The character's name has even changed several times, with Igor being the name that stayed in the pop culture lexicon.
This new Frankenstein is currently scheduled to lurk into theaters in January of 2015. It's working on a screenplay written by Max Landis (Chronicle). Actress Jessica Brown Findlay, of BBC's Downton Abbey, will also appear in the film.
At this time, not much else is known about the production, or how it intends to put its own stamp on the Frankenstein mythos. It'll be the second look at Frankenstein's monster to hit theaters within a year, with Aaron Eckhart's I, Frankenstein coming out on January 24. Eckhart's, though, is based on a graphic novel by Kevin Grevioux and is more of comic book action film. Based on the last trailer I saw for I, Frankenstein, it wouldn't appear that McCuigan's production has much to worry about in terms of anyone stealing the Frankenstein mojo.
