Following in the grand tradition of Andy Serkis (Gollum), and Mark Ruffalo (Hulk), Peter Jackson is employing the use of state-of-the-art motion capture technology to create Smaug in "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug." British actor, and rising star, Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock, Star Trek Into Darkness) is the man with tiny dots on his face this time.
Check out these photos on Flickr that show the actor filming some scenes. The actor has been very vocal about loving the mo-cap process, and he's even admitted to campaigning for mo-cap to be used at all for this role. Jackson was initially only going to use Cumberbatch's distinctive voice for the role, until the actor aggressively insisted that he wanted to help physically inhabit the character.
We'll all get to see the full effect of his performance when "The Desolation of Smaug" hits theaters on December 13th.
